The Department of Internal Medicine has its strength in Vascular Medicine and it is one of the best-known vascular centers in Germany and Europe.

A very large and a highly sophisticated outpatient department and a number of wards are dedicated to the diagnosis and management of vascular diseases (arteries, veins and lymphatics). We commonly manage acute and chronic arterial disorders involving the main artery (aorta), arteries supplying the brain, arteries supplying the upper limb, arteries of the pelvis and the lower limb, arteries supplying the kidneys and other abdominal organs. The spectrum of venous disease managed by our department includes acute thrombosis, chronic venous congestion, varicose veins and venous ulcers. When dealing with the above disorders one tends to encounter and simultaneously manage many disorders of blood clotting.

Many manual and mechanised measures are employed to manage chronic limb swelling due to congestion of the lymph vessels. We have considerable experience and expertise in managing inflammatory disease of the blood vessels (vasculitis) such as Buerger's disease, giant cell arteritis, Takayasu's arteritis, etc. Diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, systemic lupus erythematous, etc., which often have blood vessel and blood clotting disturbances are also managed by us. There is a dedicated unit in our department that manages problematic arterial and venous wounds. A modern concept of wound management is one of our strengths.

Another of our strengths lies in the inter-disciplinary cooperation between the departments of Radiology and Vascular Surgery. Angiological interventions with all the modern catheter, Laser and stenting techniques is a work of cooperation between our department and the department of radiology. Blocks in the arteries supplying the brain, could be successfully treated by implantation of stents by our radiologists.
